Cold Sores, (Herpes Simplex Virus)

Cold sores are, painful, fluid-filled blisters or small sores that appear on the lips, mouth and nose ,and are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus (HSV). The sores usually last a few days. The cold sores virus, ( Herpes Simplex ), is not completely eliminated by the body defences and because of this, cold sores often recur.

There are two types of Herpes Simplex virus, type I and type II. Cold sores are usually caused by type I. Herpes simplex infections are extremely contagious. The cold sores virus is spread from person to person close contact with sores or even from contact with apparently normal skin that is shedding the virus, eg kissing and infected saliva . People are most contagious when active blister-like cold sores are present. Once the blisters have dried and crusted over the risk of cold sores infection is significantly decreased. However, a person infected with cold sores can pass it on to another person even when a cold sores blister is not present. The blisters dry up rapidly and leave scabs that last anywhere from a day to several days, depending on the severity of the infection.
